After the overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortion rights have eroded in America. This represents an assault on individual rights, on a woman’s right to make decisions about her body and life. The assault is intensifying because few know how to present a rational case in defense of abortion rights.
In 2022, the Ayn Rand Institute Press published a book offering such a defense: Ben Bayer’s Why the Right to Abortion Is Sacrosanct. We are pleased to announce the publication of a second, expanded edition of Bayer’s book.
The new edition of Why the Right to Abortion Is Sacrosanct contains three new essays. The first of these, “Individual Rights and the Right to Abortion,” presents a thorough theoretical defense of the right, grounded in the history and philosophy of individual rights. The other new essays apply this theory to recent controversies, for instance the Alabama Supreme Court decision to equate frozen embryos with children.
“Roe v. Wade could not be saved,” writes Bayer in the preface to the book. “But I am convinced that if we are armed with a comprehensive philosophic case, we can offer support for an inviolate right to abortion, and the battle to protect it is ours to win.”
You can now purchase the expanded edition of Why the Right to Abortion Is Sacrosanct in paperback and Kindle. The audiobook form is forthcoming.
