The ongoing U.S. border crisis is exposing how the U.S. immigration system is broken. “But,” as Agustina Vergara Cid points out in her 2023 OCON talk in Miami, “the immigration system also crushes people who want to ‘follow the rules’ and ‘get in line.’”

By relating the personal stories of legal immigrants, including her own, Vergara Cid makes the bold claim that it is primarily people who want to come to work legally in the U.S. (not criminals, terrorists, or the infectious) whom the immigration system is designed to keep out.

In this talk, titled “The Immorality of the U.S. Immigration System,” Vergara Cid argues that the U.S. immigration system is fundamentally immoral because it criminalizes work, sacrifices people of ability to those without ability, and limits the freedom of Americans to hire whom they choose.

By reporting these stories, Vergara Cid provides a unique view of what’s wrong with the U.S. immigration system, and how to change it.

The recording of her compelling presentation is now available to watch online.
