Following Hamas’s barbaric attack on Israel, and Israel’s initial response to it, many people insist that Israel has a duty to do everything possible not to harm innocent Palestinians and that its response has to be “proportionate.”

How should one think about the killing of innocents in war? How should one evaluate “international laws” pertaining to war? What is the proper action of a nation that is attacked? Such questions are crucial in thinking about military conflicts.
