From students to intellectual professionals and from professional intellectuals to politicians, ARI’s speakers reach all kinds of audiences. During his recent speaking tour in the UK, Yaron Brook, chairman of ARI’s board of directors, was invited to speak at the House of Lords, the upper chamber of the British Parliament.
With about thirty Lords and MPs in attendance, Brook talked about President Trump’s trade policy, particularly the issue of tariffs and their consequences. The talk was followed by a Q&A session. The questions focused mostly on tariffs and the U.S. trade deal with the UK. Other topics included contemporary wars, military spending, and security.
I asked Yonatan Daon, ARI’s outreach coordinator who organizes many such events, to share his thoughts:
I reached out to Lord Daniel Hannan, whom I know to be a strong advocate of free trade and free markets. He responded positively and offered to host us in one of his rooms at the House of Lords . . . [Brook’s] remarks sparked many questions from the audience, who, for the most part, seemed to share his pro–free trade stance and concerns about the damage protectionist policies — particularly Trump’s — could do to the UK and the world. There were also questions about Ukraine and Israel. [Brook] gave clear, principled answers, reaffirming his unequivocal support for both. . . . Afterwards, Lord Hannan gave us a private tour of the House of Lords, joined by a few other Lords and business leaders. It was a very positive experience — highly successful — and Lord Hannan warmly invited us to return in the future.
