Meet the New Socialism, Same as the Old

In this episode, Ben Bayer reads aloud his article, “Meet the New Socialism, Same as the Old.” In that essay, he examines recent arguments by socialist intellectuals like Bhaskar Sunkara who are attracting more attention from young people. Sunkara argues that socialism is essentially the extension of democracy from the political to the economic realm. Bayer responds that this argument trades on an ambiguity about the meaning of “democracy,” and that the essence of the socialist approach to democracy leads to brutality. Bayer’s article was originally published in New Ideal, the Ayn Rand Institute’s journal, on September 2, 2019.
